More Murphys lodging information

Hello Daffodil Friends,

We've implemented this "Murphys 2010 Net" to provide and update information about the upcoming ADS Convention and Daffodil Show to be held in Murphys, California from 11-14 March, 2010. Those on the Net are persons we thought might be interested in attending the 2010 Convention. If you do not want to receive information about the Murphys event, just click "reply" and send me a message with "remove me" in the text. I'll remove your name immediately. Otherwise, periodically you'll receive updated information. If you know of persons who might want to receive information about the Convention, click "reply" and send me their names and email addresses. I'll add them.

To those of you who have already been on this Net - nothing has changed except that we've added many new subscribers. To new subscribers - welcome!

The American Daffodil Society's 2010 Convention and National Show

The Northern California Daffodil Society (NCDS) and the ADS invite daffodil enthusiasts worldwide to their daffodil convention in a winery, 11-14 March 2010. Planned as a participative daffodil retreat, the convention activities will be in the modern business-conference facilities of the Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, California. This is California's famous Gold-Rush country, in the scenic foothills of the Sierra Nevada range.

Convention festivities will begin with a welcoming buffet early Thursday evening, March 11. This will be an optional event, since some attendees might well be tired from a long day's travel and prefer an "early-to-bed." Those persons bringing blooms and photographs to the National Show can enter them from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. The full Convention program will start on Friday morning. Judging the National Show will begin at 10am on Friday morning and the Show will open at 1pm on Friday. The Show will be open until 4pm on Sunday. The Convention closes with dinner and farewell speaker on Sunday evening, March 14.

Attendees are advised to fly to Sacramento rather than San Francisco. From Sacramento International Airport, Convention coaches will convey attendees to Murphys, a two-hour ride. Once settled in Murphys, there will be shuttle service available between accommodations and the Convention site at Ironstone, a mile away.

Sacramento Airport is served by all major airlines. Non-stop flights from the East Coast are not common; usually there will be a connection at a hub (eg, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City). There are non-stop flights from Atlanta and Dallas. In order to use the Thursday afternoon coach service from the Sacramento Airport to Murphys, you must arrive at the Airport by mid-afternoon (ie, 3pm). An option would be to fly to Sacramento on Wednesday afternoon or evening, get a good night's sleep at a nearby hotel, and then catch the coach from the Airport to Murphys on Thursday. We anticipate coaches would depart the Airport Thursday at 1pm, 2:30pm, and 4pm. Coaches will leave Murphys early Monday morning (March 15) to return attendees to Sacramento Airport. You should not schedule a return flight on Monday that departs before 11:30am.

ADS Convention 2010 will be an international event bridging the four years between World Daffodil Conventions. We expect that a substantial number of our overseas friends will attend. The National Daffodil Show will contain the largest showing of miniature daffodils ever featuring innovative seedlings and registrations from Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe - as well as miniature blooms from Larry Force, Delia Bankhead, Walter Blom, Steve Vinisky, Nancy Wilson and others. Convention programs are planned on Breeding Green Daffodils, Breakthroughs in Miniatures, Species Conservation, Chasing the Elusive White-Orange Trumpet, Tracing Historics Backwards, Seeing into Our Daffodil Future, and Daffodil Jeopardy. Evening speakers will be Peter Ramsay and Ron Scamp.

Accommodations in Murphys will be in two modern motels, plus the option of fully-furnished vacation cottages. Information on Convention registration, accommodations, and transportation will be found on the NCDS website www.daffodil.org.

There are 107 rooms in the two motels. From past Conventions, we anticipate the rooms at the motels will accommodate about 175 persons. (Typically during a Convention at least two-thirds of the rooms have double occupancy.) There are also twelve fully furnished, two-bedroom "vacation cottages" located around the little town. Ideal for two couples, these twelve could accommodate another 45 persons. So there's room for approximately 220 persons in Murphys. Should we need more, we have blocked 50 rooms at a nice motel in Angels Camp, eight miles away. Complete information on selecting and reserving accommodations is contained in an accompanying message.

The June issue of The Daffodil Journal will provide an overview of the Convention. The September issue will contain a description of the Convention program and will provide a Registration Form. In the near future it also will be possible to download the Convention Registration Form from the NCDS website. Because the 2010 Convention will be in early March, both registration and accommodation reservations must be completed much earlier than is usual.
